Data Rescue Mac Frequently Asked Questions

  • I just ran Data Rescue and it found files, it asks me if I want to calibrate manually. What does that mean?
This means that Data Rescue was unable to determine the allocation block layout format of your hard drive.
In order to use manual calibration you must have a backup of at least 1-5 of the files your looking for on the "corrupt" drive. They do not have to be up to date backups. In most cases people only have older backups. Then Data Rescue would use the volume header information from these files to try and find the same information on the corrupted drive. In some cases this results in Data Resue finding more files then just the files you selected.
To select Manual calibration go to the Data Rescue File
Menu and select Expert. Under Expert choose Allocation Block Layout. Now select the manual calibration which is the second circle on the left hand side of the screen. You will notice that the Manual button on the right hand side of the screen lights up, select that. Now you will be directed to the select the drive where your older backups are stored.
